About
Also known as: ニジュー, 니쥬
NiziU came out of a reality survival show, Nizi Project, where J.Y. Park picked a nine member lineup that would go on to become one of Japan's fastest rising girl groups. Their pre debut EP Make You Happy topped Billboard Japan's Hot Albums chart, and the title track hit 100 million streams on the Japan Hot 100 faster than any female artist before them. Their debut single Step and a Step then sold 312,000 copies in its first week, the second best opening ever for a female act's debut single in Japan. They also made it onto NHK's Kohaku Uta Gassen just 29 days after debuting, the fastest anyone has managed that. From there it was Take a Picture and Poppin' Shakin', a double A side that set a streaming record on the Oricon chart, and their first album U, led by Chopstick. The group is backed by JYP Entertainment and Sony Music Japan, and eventually made its Korean debut with the single album Press Play.
