About
Also known as: Nocturnal Emission, Nocturnal Emmissions
Nocturnal Emissions is the sound art project of Nigel Ayers, launched in Derbyshire in the late 1970s and operating ever since as one of the more restless and hard to categorise acts in the post industrial underground. The project draws from musique concrète, electro acoustic composition, sound collage, ambient, and noise music, often bundled together with video art, hypertext, and other guerrilla multimedia tactics under what Ayers calls a campaign of sign ontology. They founded Sterile Records in 1979, a label that blended Fluxus experimentation with punk energy and anti capitalist messaging. Since 1984 the project has been primarily Ayers working solo, though collaborations have ranged from Butoh dance performances across Europe and the US to joint records with artists like Mick Harris and Robin Storey. The 1983 album Drowning in a Sea of Bliss was ranked 58th on Fact magazine's list of the 100 best albums of the 1980s, a decent marker of how much ground the project covered in that decade.
