About

Also known as: NWD Philharmonie, North West German Philharmonic

This orchestra has put more than 200 records and CDs on the shelf, which is a serious body of work for a regional ensemble. Based in Herford and founded in 1950, the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie is one of North Rhine Westphalia's state orchestras, with roots in a 1946 group formed from members of the old Linzer Reichs Bruckner Orchester and the Prager Deutsche Philharmonie. Its discography ranges from Smetana's The Bartered Bride sung in German to Max Reger under Hermann Scherchen, and even a premiere recording of Shostakovich's unfinished opera The Gamblers. On stage, the orchestra became the engine behind Richard Wagner productions at the Stadttheater Minden, building up over the years to two complete Ring cycles in 2019. It works with the public broadcaster WDR3 and reaches more than 12,000 children a year through school programs. Jonathan Bloxham took over as chief conductor from the 2024 to 2025 season.
