Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson built North Mississippi Allstars around the raw, rootsy blues of the hill country around Hernando, Mississippi, blending it with rock and even traces of bluegrass in a way that felt genuinely lived in rather than nostalgic. Their debut album Shake Hands with Shorty landed a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album, and they followed it up with more nominations for 51 Phantom and Electric Blue Watermelon. That 2005 album was a guest heavy affair featuring Lucinda Williams, Robert Randolph, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Luther spent several years moonlighting with the Black Crowes, contributing to three of their studio albums, while Cody kept busy with the Hill Country Revue side project. Prayer for Peace hit number one on the Billboard Blues Albums Chart in 2017, Up and Rolling earned Favorite Blues Album from AllMusic in 2019, and the band has kept rolling since, releasing Still Shakin' in 2025.
