Baltimore's Marcus Brown makes music under the name Nourished by Time, a name he chose as a personal mantra rather than use what he called his "boring" real name. His sound pulls together lo fi synth textures, post punk edges and the warm, soulful feel of early 90s R&B, with influences ranging from Prince and SWV to Arthur Russell and Tony Toni Toné. His 2023 debut album Erotic Probiotic 2, recorded in his parents' basement during COVID lockdowns, landed him Best New Music from Pitchfork and spots on year end lists at The Guardian and Paste. From there he signed to XL Recordings and released the five track Catching Chickens EP in 2024, named after a scene in Rocky II. His second full length, The Passionate Ones, followed in 2025. Along the way he has collaborated with Yaeji, remixed Dry Cleaning, and appeared on tracks with Metronomy and Kacy Hill. Lyrically he is not shy about class politics, once joking that he could be a socialist rock star but not a socialist pop star.
