Rotterdam's Officium Triste have been grinding out death doom since the early 1990s, and they've even coined a name for their own strain of it: Rotterdoom. Drawing on the bleak, melodic weight of My Dying Bride and early Anathema, they build their sound around death grunts with clean vocals woven in for contrast. Their home turf is Baroeg, the Rotterdam venue where they've played countless times, including a farewell show that turned out not to be a farewell at all. After a brief split in 1998, the band reformed and kept releasing records, from the debut Ne Vivam through albums like The Pathway, Reason, and Giving Yourself Away. They started out on homemade and underground labels, eventually landing a two album deal with Displeased Records. The band also recorded in their own studio, El Pato, giving them full control over their sound. Before going by Officium Triste, they operated under the name Reincremated.
