Few Ukrainian rock bands carry the weight that Okean Elzy does. Formed in Lviv in 1994, the band built their reputation through relentless touring across Ukraine and beyond, with frontman Svyatoslav Vakarchuk as their creative and moral compass. Their early music videos broke through on MTV Russia and France's MCM Channel, and by the time they released their third album Model, they had become the face of Pepsi Cola in Ukraine. The band's reach expanded well past rock stardom when Vakarchuk was named an official Ambassador of Ukrainian Culture in 2003, and a UN Ambassador of Good Will in 2005. Musically they've stayed firmly in the rock lane across a catalogue stretching from Tam, de nas nema through to Dolce Vita, pulling crowds of over 120,000 fans on their Mira tour alone. Their solidarity with Ukraine runs deep too, from backing the Orange Revolution to performing for peacekeepers in Kosovo. More recently they teamed up with fellow Ukrainian act Odyn v kanoe for the track Misto vesny, released in 2021.
