About

Oksana Lyniv made history on 25 July 2021 when she stepped onto the podium at the Bayreuth Festival to conduct Der fliegende Holländer, becoming the first woman ever to conduct there in the festival's long history. Since 2022 she has served as music director of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, another first: no woman had previously led an Italian opera house at that level. Her path to those milestones ran through some serious stops along the way, including years as assistant to Kirill Petrenko at the Bavarian State Opera and a stint as chief conductor of the Graz Opera and Graz Philharmonic Orchestra. Beyond the podium, Lyniv founded the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine in 2016, a project close to her heart. She has conducted everything from Wagner to Puccini's Turandot, including a notable production at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma that marked Ai Weiwei's debut as an opera director. In 2024 she brought Turandot to the Metropolitan Opera as well, cementing her place among the leading conductors working in opera today.
