Oliver Anthony pulled off something genuinely unprecedented in 2023: his song "Rich Men North of Richmond" debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 without a single prior chart entry to his name, making him the first artist ever to do so. The track, recorded for a West Virginia YouTube channel called Radiowv, frames the frustrations of working class Americans through Anthony's raw country folk sound, influenced heavily by Hank Williams, and the original video racked up nine million views in five days. He released all his earlier songs, including "Ain't Gotta Dollar" and "I've Got to Get Sober", recorded straight to his mobile phone on his farm in Virginia. What makes Anthony's story stick is how deliberately he has kept things on his own terms. He turned down eight million dollar deals, brushed off the industry feeding frenzy, and kept his shows small and community focused, even opening concerts with readings from the Bible. His debut studio album, Hymnal of a Troubled Man's Mind, arrived in March 2024, and in 2025 he released the track "Scornful Woman", showing he's still very much at it on his own schedule.
