Olivia Ruiz built her name on far more than a reality TV semi final. After finishing just short of the top spot on Star Academy in 2001, she spent the following years crafting a sound that leaned into nouvelle chanson while pulling in punk, folk, and Hispanic rock. Her second album La Femme Chocolat was a genuine breakout, selling over 750,000 copies in France and earning her the Victoires de la Musique Female Artist of the Year award in 2007. She wrote all the lyrics for the follow up Miss Météores, co orchestrated the music, and brought in collaborators like rapper Buck 65 and the Noisettes, landing another French and Walloon chart topper in 2009. Ruiz has never been in a rush. She took a solo trip to Cuba before recording Le Calme et la Tempête in 2012, and her fifth studio album À Nos Corps Aimants took a couple of years longer than planned before arriving in 2016. Lately she has been releasing new music, with the single La Réplique out in late 2023 and Le Sel following in early 2024.
