About

Finnish pianist, conductor, and composer Olli Mustonen has built a reputation as one of the most distinctive classical musicians of his generation, equally at home performing, conducting, and writing his own music. His debut solo piano recording for Decca, pairing preludes by Shostakovich and Alkan, earned both the Gramophone and Edison Awards, and it remains a strong statement of where his musical instincts lie: contrapuntal complexity, a love of cycles and structures, and a fascination with how 20th century composers absorbed the logic of Bach and earlier masters. Mustonen has recorded extensively for Decca, RCA, and Ondine, covering everything from Beethoven and Prokofiev to Messiaen, often alongside names like Joshua Bell and Steven Isserlis. He performed the world premiere of Rodion Shchedrin's Piano Concerto No. 5, a piece dedicated to him, with Esa Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. As a conductor he has led the Tapiola Sinfonietta since 2003 and co founded the Helsinki Festival Orchestra, frequently appearing on both sides of the podium in the same concert.
