About
Opera Zuid is a Dutch opera company that stages both grand scale and intimate productions, drawing on professional soloists, community choirs and an orchestra to bring their work to life. One of their recent projects, Uprising, sets music by Jonathan Dove to a story about a mother and daughter on opposite sides of the climate debate, weaving together a community choir of a hundred singers with six professional soloists under directors Gable Roelofsen and Romy Roelofsen. The production treats the stage as a kind of miniature society, letting the tension between generations play out through lyrically direct orchestral music and powerful ensemble singing. On the lighter side, Opera Zuid also takes on operetta. Their staging of Paul Lincke's Frau Luna, adapted into Dutch by Paulien Cornelisse and directed by Steef de Jong, follows a group of dreamers who build an airship to find the man in the moon. De Jong's approach leans into visible theatrical illusion, building the lunar world from cardboard and string, while Philzuid supplies the swinging, energetic score.
