Otis Gibbs writes songs about everyday life in the American grain, drawing comparisons to Woody Guthrie, Tom T. Hall, Kris Kristofferson, and Townes Van Zandt. That's a serious shortlist, and his 2014 record Souvenirs of a Misspent Youth backed it up, with The Tennessean calling it his most pleasing, direct and artful work. Billy Bragg picked his song The Peoples Day for a Wall Street Journal list of top five songs with something to say, which tells you a lot about where Gibbs sits politically and musically. Beyond the records, he has built a podcast series called Thanks for Giving a Damn, racking up over 100 conversational interviews with musicians ranging from Chris Shiflett of Foo Fighters to Delbert McClinton and Marshall Crenshaw. The show made iTunes' New and Noteworthy and What's Hot lists. He has also independently released albums since 2002, keeping full control of his output the whole way through.
