About
Also known as: Final Fantasy, Michael James Owen Pallett
Owen Pallett is a Canadian composer, violinist, and vocalist from Mississauga whose work sits somewhere between the classical world and indie pop, and whose live shows are a spectacle in themselves: they play violin into a loop pedal, routing the signal through Max/MSP and SooperLooper to build up layered, multi phonic textures across the whole stage. Recording as Final Fantasy, Pallett won the 2006 Polaris Music Prize for He Poos Clouds, an album made entirely of string quartet arrangements inspired by Dungeons and Dragons schools of magic. They famously gave the prize money away to bands that needed it more. Beyond their solo work, Pallett has been a key collaborator for Arcade Fire as string arranger and touring member, and picked up an Academy Award nomination alongside Arcade Fire's William Butler for scoring Spike Jonze's film Her. Their arranging credits stretch from Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran to R.E.M. and Linkin Park, and their commissions include work for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the National Ballet of Canada.
