About
Paradox Jazz Orchestra has built a reputation on an independent artistic vision and a powerful big band sound. The group takes a distinctive approach to programming: rather than playing it safe with crowd pleasing standards, they craft specially written arrangements that give classic material a fresh shape for large jazz ensemble. Their work leaves ample room for improvisation, interaction and genuine musical risk taking, producing a sound that can be raw one moment and refined the next. A collaboration with saxophonist James Carter shows the kind of company they keep. Carter, who broke through in the nineties and has since played alongside names like Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock and Lester Bowie, brings a range from velvet soft to explosive across tenor, alto, soprano and baritone saxophone. Together with the orchestra, the music moves fluidly between tradition and experiment, keeping both in productive tension.
