Parker McCollum has built his reputation on a sound that sits somewhere between Texas country, Americana, and folk, rooted in the ranching landscape of Limestone County where he spent his summers. His debut album The Limestone Kid came out in 2015 to strong notices, with The Austin Chronicle rating it 3.5 out of 5 and comparing him favorably to Charlie Robison, while Texas Music Pickers put it somewhere between Todd Snider and Whiskeytown. His 2017 full length Probably Wrong, produced by Grammy winner Lloyd Maines, was his first to chart on Billboard, landing at number 6 on Heatseekers Albums. After signing with MCA Nashville in 2019 and releasing the single "Pretty Heart", McCollum stepped up to the major league with Gold Chain Cowboy in 2021, produced by Jon Randall. Reviewers noted it was his most polished work yet while still sounding distinctly like himself rather than generic country radio fare. George Strait is his openly stated musical hero, and that neotraditional influence runs through everything he does.
