Few voices in American music carry the kind of raw authority that Patti LaBelle brings. Nicknamed the Godmother of Soul, the Philadelphia native first made her mark as the frontwoman of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles in the early 1960s before the group reinvented itself as Labelle and scored a US number one with the funk classic "Lady Marmalade". When the group split in 1977, LaBelle pivoted to a solo career that hit its commercial peak in the mid 1980s with "New Attitude", "Stir It Up", and the chart topping duet "On My Own" with Michael McDonald, which also pushed her album Winner in You to the top of the Billboard 200. Her Grammy wins for Burnin' and the live album Live! One Night Only underscore just how commanding she is in performance. A dramatic soprano with serious modal register range, she has sold more than 50 million records over a career spanning seven decades. She has also carved out space in film and television, appearing in the Academy Award nominated A Soldier's Story and American Horror Story: Freak Show, and even sparked a viral moment when a sweet potato pie bearing her name swept the internet.
