About
Also known as: John William Weller, Jr., P.W., Paul John Weller, Paul Wellar
Paul Weller built his reputation as the driving force behind the Jam, the mod revival band that racked up four UK number ones and became one of the most influential British acts of the late 1970s and early 1980s. His sharp, class conscious lyrics set him apart, and the nickname Modfather stuck long after the Jam called it a day in 1982. He then shifted gears entirely with the Style Council, digging into jazz, soul and house before that project wound down in 1989. His solo comeback in the early 1990s was slow but decisive. Wild Wood in 1993 won him a Brit Award for Best British Male and brought a whole new generation on side, including the Britpop crowd who credited him as a key influence. Stanley Road followed in 1995 and went straight to number one, featuring contributions from Noel Gallagher and Steve Winwood. Songs like You Do Something to Me and Wild Wood remain fixtures of his catalogue, the kind of tracks that remind you why he earned the Outstanding Contribution to Music Brit Award in 2006.
