About
Pedro Abrunhosa came to pop through jazz, and it shows. He spent the 1980s as a double bass player and teacher around Porto, co founded the Jazz School of Porto, and scored films and theatre pieces, winning Best Soundtrack at the Madrid Film Festival for Novo Mundo. Then in 1994 his debut album Viagens, recorded with his band Bandemónio and featuring sax great Maceo Parker, made him the fastest selling artist in Portuguese record industry history at the time. It went triple platinum, he played over 120 concerts in a few months, and Billboard called it a music revolution in a country wary of jazzy sounds. The follow up Tempo in 1996 sealed his status, and six of his eight studio albums have hit number one in Portugal. He is also instantly recognisable because he never appears in public without sunglasses. He even played himself in Manoel de Oliveira's 1999 film The Letter, and he sits on the board of the Portuguese Authors Society.
