About
Also known as: Macabre
One of the founding pillars of doom metal, Pentagram have been grinding away since the early 1970s out of Alexandria, Virginia, and their influence on heavy music is hard to overstate. Often grouped alongside Candlemass, Saint Vitus, and Trouble as one of the genre's 'big four', the band draws obvious comparisons to Black Sabbath, though frontman Bobby Liebling bristles at the 'doom metal' tag and prefers the term 'heavy hard rock'. Kiss reportedly tried to buy the rights to two of their songs back in the seventies, which says something about the quality of material the band was sitting on. Despite years of demos and rehearsal tapes circulating underground, Pentagram didn't release their debut full length, Relentless, until 1985. Nine studio albums have followed since. The band's back catalogue got some proper recognition when Relapse Records issued the First Daze Here compilation in 2001, drawing on early recordings from the seventies. Liebling remains at the centre of it all, a figure once described as the US version of Ozzy Osbourne, minus the bank account.
