About
Also known as: Bijou Drains, Pete Townshend - The Who's Tommy, PeteTownsend, Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend, Townsend, Pete
Pete Townshend plays guitar like he's trying to win an argument with it, and that aggressive style became one of the defining sounds of the Who. As the band's co founder and principal songwriter, he wrote more than 100 songs across 12 of their studio albums, including the rock operas Tommy and Quadrophenia, plus radio staples from Who's Next. He also sings second lead, plays keyboards, and picked up banjo, accordion, violin, drums and plenty more, all self taught. Away from the band, Townshend has a long solo catalogue of more than 100 songs, plus radio jingles, TV themes, and writing credits for other acts. He has also written for newspapers and magazines and authored books and scripts. The honours stack up: a Brit Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a Who member, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and Kennedy Center Honors. Rolling Stone put him at No. 37 on its 2023 list of the greatest guitarists ever.
