Few orchestras have had as turbulent a founding story as the Philharmonia. Walter Legge, a record producer for EMI, built it from scratch in 1945 with an obsessive eye for quality, famously refusing to carry a single weak player. The early years brought conductors like Richard Strauss, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Arturo Toscanini and Herbert von Karajan through its ranks, and within its first two decades it was widely considered the finest of London's five symphony orchestras. The orchestra's history has never been short on drama. When Legge tried to dissolve it in 1964, the players simply kept going without him, eventually winning back the Philharmonia name in 1977. Otto Klemperer, Riccardo Muti, Giuseppe Sinopoli and Christoph von Dohnányi each left their mark across the following decades. Esa Pekka Salonen led the orchestra from 2008 to 2021, with Santtu Matias Rouvali stepping in as principal conductor after him. With over 160 concerts a year, extensive touring and more than 100 commissioned works, this is an orchestra that has never stood still.
