About
Phish built one of the most devoted fanbases in rock not through radio play or music videos but through relentless live performances and the free exchange of bootleg recordings. The Burlington, Vermont quartet, anchored by guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer Jon Fishman, and keyboardist Page McConnell, has been turning concerts into sprawling, unrepeatable events since 1983. Their music pulls from funk, reggae, progressive rock, jazz, bluegrass, folk, and plenty more, often within a single show, and the comparison to the Grateful Dead is one they have earned rather than inherited. Most of their original material is co written by Anastasio and longtime lyricist Tom Marshall. After a breakup in 2004 and a full reunion in 2009, Phish has kept the engine running ever since, selling over 8 million albums and DVDs in the US along the way. Their own label, JEMP Records, handles an ongoing archive of live releases, and recent shows suggest the band is still very much in the business of keeping things interesting on stage.
