About
Matthew Houck has been recording and performing as Phosphorescent since 2001, building a catalog of quietly compelling folk rock and indie rock that sits somewhere between country wandering and psychedelic haze. His breakthrough came with Aw Come Aw Wry and Pride, the latter earning an 8.0 from Pitchfork and landing on Stylus Magazine's best of 2007 list. One of his most talked about projects was To Willie, a heartfelt tribute to Willie Nelson released through Dead Oceans in 2009, inspired by Nelson's own tribute record to Lefty Frizzell. His sixth studio album Muchacho arrived in 2013 to wide critical praise, and C'est La Vie followed in 2018. More recently, Phosphorescent signed to Verve Records for Revelator, released in 2024. It marked a first: a song written by his partner and collaborator Jo Schornikow, breaking Houck's long streak of writing everything himself.
