About

Pieter Jan Belder is one of those rare musicians who genuinely masters multiple historical instruments, moving between recorder, harpsichord and fortepiano with equal authority. Based in the Netherlands, he built a serious discography through his work with Brilliant Classics, recording all 555 keyboard sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti in 2007, the complete Well Tempered Clavier by Bach, and works by Rameau and Soler. Between 2010 and 2013 he tackled the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, over 300 pieces spread across composers like William Byrd, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and John Bull, using different instruments to match the character of each piece. Belder also founded Musica Amphion, an ensemble focused largely on Baroque repertoire. Together they have recorded the complete works of Arcangelo Corelli, Telemann's full Tafelmusik, Bach's Brandenburg Concertos and the complete chamber music of Henry Purcell. The ongoing Bach in Context series pairs Bach's vocal and organ works around a single theme, showing just how methodically Belder approaches the repertoire he cares about.
