About
Pisces were a psychedelic rock outfit from Rockford, Illinois, who spent more time perfecting their studio craft than playing live shows. Working out of a makeshift studio in the back of a music store, core members Paul DiVenti and Jim Krein threw themselves into backwards guitar techniques, phased drums, and distorted vocals, drawing heavily from the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper era. Their label was run by a local tailor, which about sums up how far outside the mainstream they were operating. The band's recordings only surfaced decades later, when the Numero Group released the compilation A Lovely Sight in 2009. Critics zeroed in on vocalist Linda Bruner, a teenager who had originally come to Krein for guitar lessons and ended up delivering some of the most haunting moments on the record. A follow up EP, Songs for a Friend, stripped things back further, showcasing Bruner's quietly devastating covers alongside her sole original composition.
