Porcupine Tree started out as an elaborate hoax: Steven Wilson invented a fictional 1970s rock legend, complete with fake band members and a fabricated history, then actually recorded hours of music to back up the story. What began as a private joke eventually became one of progressive rock's most devoted cult followings, with publications like Classic Rock and PopMatters calling them "the most important band you'd never heard of." Over time the sound shifted from psychedelic and space rock into Pink Floyd territory, then pushed further into progressive metal, showing a willingness to keep evolving that kept fans genuinely hooked. By the early 2000s the core lineup of Wilson, keyboardist Richard Barbieri, and drummer Gavin Harrison was pushing into heavier territory, partly through Wilson's work alongside Opeth, which brought Porcupine Tree to a whole new metal audience. After 2010 the band went quiet for over a decade, with each member pursuing solo work. Then in 2022, Wilson, Barbieri and Harrison returned with Closure/Continuation, a reunion that nobody saw coming and that proved the band still had plenty left to say.
