About
Primevil left behind exactly one album and one single, and somehow that was enough to earn them a spot in heavy music history. The American band was active in the 1970s, and in 1972 they cut their only single, Too Dead To Live. Two years later came Smokin' Bats at Campton's, a record that has since been called a bona fide stoner rock touchstone. The lineup was Dave Campton on lead vocals, harp and percussion, Larry Lucas on guitar and vocals, Jay Wilfong on electric guitar and screams, Mark Sipe on bass, and Mel Cupp on drums. Their obscurity turned into cult status over time: the album got a CD reissue in 2006, Classic Rock magazine name checked them in a 2007 piece on the lost pioneers of heavy metal, and Cleopatra Records put out the first official US CD and vinyl reissues in late 2023 and early 2024.
