About
Also known as: プライマス, 프라이머스
Primus built their reputation on being genuinely hard to pin down. The El Sobrante trio led by bassist and vocalist Les Claypool blends funk, metal, progressive rock, and psychedelia into something that critics kept labeling funk metal, even though the band always pushed back on that tag. Critic Robert Christgau put it well in 1993: Primus is "quite possibly the strangest top 10 band ever, and good for them." Their early 1990s run was remarkable. Sailing the Seas of Cheese broke them into the mainstream, Pork Soda reached the top ten on the Billboard 200 with "My Name Is Mud" riding high on the rock charts, and Tales from the Punchbowl kept the momentum going with "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" becoming the only Primus song to chart outside North America. Beyond their own records, they wrote the South Park theme, which means their sound has been in millions of living rooms without people even knowing it.
