Pyrrhon named themselves after an ancient Greek philosopher, which tells you something about how seriously this Brooklyn quartet takes the intellectual side of extreme metal. Since forming in 2008, they have built a reputation for pushing technical death metal into genuinely uncomfortable territory, blending dissonance, mathcore aggression, and avant garde instincts into something that resists easy categorization. Their signing to Relapse Records after the debut full length An Excellent Servant But a Terrible Master showed the underground was paying attention. The band hit their stride across a string of albums on Willowtip, including What Passes for Survival and Abscess Time, with their most recent record Exhaust dropping in 2024. Vocalist Doug Moore has been open about the group's core ambition: stretch what heavy metal can mean without losing the raw intensity that made people care about it in the first place. Few bands in the genre push that tension as far as Pyrrhon do.
