About

Also known as: Kingfisher

Racing Mount Pleasant, formerly known as Kingfisher, started out at the University of Michigan and quickly grew into something far bigger than a typical college band. At their peak they had eight musicians, two visual artists, and two photographers, all students, working together on their 2022 debut Grip Your Fist, I'm Heaven Bound, which The Michigan Daily called a remarkably mature album. Their sound pulls from folk intimacy, shoegaze dynamics, jazz and classical arrangements, and a touch of electronica, drawing comparisons to Bon Iver, Lord Huron, and Black Country, New Road. In 2025 they rebranded as Racing Mount Pleasant, inspired by a highway exit sign near Chicago, and released a self titled album on August 15. The record was built across more than six spaces and studios over three years. Their live shows are just as considered: projectors sync to the music, and the band sometimes asks the crowd to sit rather than stand, chasing a specific kind of quiet immersion. They opened for Geese on select dates of the Getting Killed tour and shared a bill with Cameron Winter.
