About
Ben Cooper stumbled on the name Radical Face by accident: he spotted it on a flyer that turned out to be an ad for a 'Radical Face Lift', with the word 'lift' torn off. That kind of quietly strange, slightly surreal sensibility runs all through his music. His most ambitious project is The Family Tree, a trilogy of albums tracking four generations of the fictional Northcote family through war, death, and the supernatural, set in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Cooper even limited himself to instruments that would have existed at the time, using specific ones to represent individual family members across the more than 30 songs that make up the series. His 2018 album Missing Film flipped the script entirely, a fully instrumental record released under an open license so independent filmmakers could use it royalty free. He has also been quietly building a massive multimedia fairy tale called A Light in the Woods, blending narrated story, animated paintings, and original songs into something closer to an epic animated film than a conventional album. The first installment dropped in October 2023.
