Rayland Baxter has a knack for making Americana feel both deeply personal and quietly cinematic. Signed to ATO Records, the Nashville musician released his debut full length Feathers & Fishhooks in 2012, followed by the EP Ashkelon, named after a town in Israel where he spent a pivotal stretch of his life. His second album Imaginary Man came out in 2015, and Wide Awake followed in 2018, cementing a sound that sits comfortably between alternative country and something more atmospheric. One of his more unexpected moves was Good Mmornin, a 2019 record of seven Mac Miller covers he dropped the day before playing Newport Folk Festival, where he performed the songs live for the first time. His fourth studio album, If I Were A Butterfly, arrived in 2022. He is the son of musician Bucky Baxter, though his own catalog has carved out a identity very much its own.
