Red Velvet built their whole identity around a split personality. The "red" side is bright, poppy and willing to play with electronic and funk, while the "velvet" side leans into smooth, 90s flavoured R&B with touches of ballad and hip hop. SM Entertainment launched them in 2014 as its first girl group in five years, and the lineup of Irene, Seulgi, Wendy and Joy became a quintet when Yeri joined in 2015 alongside the chart topping EP Ice Cream Cake. The hits came fast. "Red Flavor" and "Power Up" both reached number one on the Gaon Digital Chart, and "Dumb Dumb", "Russian Roulette", "Rookie", "Peek a Boo", "Bad Boy", "Psycho" and "Feel My Rhythm" all landed in the top three. They also made a move into Japan with the EPs #Cookie Jar and Sappy, followed by the album Bloom. Along the way they collected a Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Female Group and a Korean Music Award for Best Pop Song, and Spotify ranked them the fifth most streamed K pop artist worldwide in early 2020.
