Newark's own Redman built his reputation as one of hip hop's most energetic and unpredictable MCs, signing to Def Jam in the early 1990s after being discovered by Erick Sermon of EPMD. His 1992 debut Whut? Thee Album blended reggae and funk with a fluid rap style, earned him a gold certification and a Rap Artist of the Year nod from The Source. He kept that momentum going through a string of critically praised records, with Muddy Waters and Malpractice both landing inside the top 15 of the Billboard 200. Redman is probably best known outside hardcore hip hop circles for his long running partnership with Method Man, which produced the collaborative album Blackout! and the comedy film How High. He also popped up on Christina Aguilera's 2002 hit Dirrty and was famously name dropped by Eminem in Till I Collapse as his favourite rapper. As a member of Def Squad and the founder of his own Gilla House imprint, he has stayed connected to a wide circle of collaborators across his career.
