Few conductors carry a résumé quite like Riccardo Chailly's. The Milan born maestro has led some of the world's great orchestras in succession, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra for sixteen years, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, and now both the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and La Scala, where he first stepped onto the podium back in 1978 conducting Massenet's Werther. He has recorded exclusively with Decca for three decades, building a catalogue that spans Bruckner and Mahler symphonies through to contemporary repertoire he actively championed at every post he held. His work at the Concertgebouw is particularly fondly remembered. He pushed an orchestra steeped in the Germanic tradition toward 20th century and contemporary music, and led a major Mahler festival in 1995 marking the centenary of Mahler's first appearance at that hall. That same instinct for broadening the canon showed up in Leipzig, where he organised an international Mahler festival featuring ten orchestras. The Shostakovich Jazz Album he made became a genuine crossover hit, selling well over a quarter of a million copies.
