Ricky Montgomery nearly walked away from music altogether before TikTok had other ideas. His two singles "Mr. Loverman" and "Line Without a Hook" went viral on the platform in 2020, sparking a bidding war that landed him a deal with Warner Records. The LA singer songwriter had been quietly building his catalog since his debut album Montgomery Ricky in 2016, and co founded the indie act The Honeysticks with a childhood friend the following year. His songs draw on real personal weight, including "Black Fins", a 2023 track about the death of his father. Montgomery's sound sits in a candid, emotionally direct corner of indie pop, and his catalog has kept growing with the albums Rick in 2023 and Rick(y) in 2024. He has been open about the downsides of virality, describing how chasing promotion can pull artists away from the actual work of making music. In 2024 he announced he had been dropped by Warner Records, releasing the single "Superfan" the same day.
