About
RJD2 built his reputation on instrumental hip hop that felt genuinely cinematic, and nothing illustrates that better than "A Beautiful Mine", the track that opened every episode of Mad Men. Born Ramble Jon Krohn and based in Columbus, Ohio, he broke through in 2002 with Deadringer on El P's Definitive Jux label, a record that put him at the centre of the early 2000s underground hip hop scene. His stage name is a nod to R2 D2 from Star Wars, which says something about his playful side. Over the years he has kept busy across several projects, from the Soul Position collab with rapper Blueprint to the Icebird duo with vocalist Aaron Livingston. His seventh solo album The Fun Ones landed in 2020, featuring guest spots from Aceyalone, Homeboy Sandman, STS, and others. He also released a course on sampling and arranging with music school Soundfly, which fits neatly for someone whose whole craft is built around chopping and reconstructing sound.
