About

Also known as: Robert H. Dupuis

Robbie Dupree is the Brooklyn born soft rock and yacht rock artist whose silky 1980 single "Steal Away" climbed to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the defining tracks of that smooth West Coast sound. "Hot Rod Hearts" followed it to number 15, and together they made Dupree a genuine radio staple of the era, earning him a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 1981. He lost out to Christopher Cross, which, given how closely their sounds were linked, feels almost poetic. Dupree never really left the scene. He released the album Time and Tide in 2010 with former E Street Band keyboardist David Sancious, performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon as part of a yacht rock tribute, and kept touring through the 2010s alongside acts like Christopher Cross, Al Stewart, and Ambrosia. One genuinely odd footnote: in 1987 he contributed a song to a WWE wrestling album, and an instrumental version of it became entrance music for the tag team Strike Force.
