Robert Earl Keen has been a cornerstone of Texas Americana since the early 1980s, building a devoted following through relentless touring and a catalog that spans country, folk, and everything in between. His signature song, "The Road Goes on Forever", first appeared on his 1989 album West Textures and proved so compelling that fellow Texan Joe Ely covered it on his 1993 album Love and Danger. That same Ely record also picked up another Keen original, "Whenever Kindness Fails", underlining just how strong a songwriter Keen had become. Over the decades he put out a string of albums on labels including Arista, Lost Highway, and Audium/Koch, working with producers like Gurf Morlix and Lloyd Maines to keep his sound rooted but never stale. He announced a farewell tour wrapping up in September 2022, only to quietly return to the stage in 2023 and beyond, which honestly feels very on brand for someone whose road, as the song says, goes on forever.
