About
Roberto González Monjas wears a lot of hats, and he carries them all well. The Valladolid born conductor and violinist currently leads three major orchestras simultaneously: the Orchester Musikkollegium Winterthur, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. He also held the concertmaster chair at both the Musikkollegium Winterthur and the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, which gives him a perspective on orchestral music that most conductors simply do not have. As a violinist, González Monjas has a broad reach, performing everything from classical repertoire to works by Szymanowski, Vaughan Williams, and Esa Pekka Salonen. Composer Richard Dubugnon wrote and dedicated a violin concerto to him, which González Monjas premiered in 2018. His recital partner of choice is pianist Kit Armstrong, though he has also performed alongside Yuja Wang and others. Away from the concert hall, he co founded Iberacademy in Medellín, Colombia, a non profit focused on music education for young and vulnerable communities across Latin America.
