Róisín Murphy first made her name as one half of Moloko, the duo she formed with Mark Brydon after meeting him at a party in 1994, opening with what may be the best chat up line in pop history: "Do you like my tight sweater? See how it fits my body." That band gave her a taste for electronic music with personality, and she carried it straight into a solo career that has only grown stranger and more compelling with time. Her debut solo album Ruby Blue, made with experimental producer Matthew Herbert, sampled everyday objects like cosmetics and brass mice, and Pitchfork called it "the ultimate combination of human warmth and technological know how". After years of one off singles and guest spots, she came roaring back with Hairless Toys in 2015, which earned a Mercury Prize nomination. She followed it quickly with Take Her Up to Monto, then collaborated with producer Maurice Fulton on a run of 12 inch singles. The albums Róisín Machine and Hit Parade, released in 2020 and 2023, are widely considered the creative peak of her solo run so far, blending dance floor heat with genuine artistic ambition.
