Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever run three guitarists and vocalists at the front simultaneously, which gives their Melbourne indie rock a restless, layered energy that sets them apart. Fran Keaney, Tom Russo, and Joe White share lead duties, and that three headed approach has drawn comparisons to the Go Betweens and placed them squarely in the jangle pop tradition. Their 2017 EP The French Press put them on the map internationally, landing on Sub Pop and pulling an 8.1 from Pitchfork, and their debut album Hope Downs followed in 2018 to even stronger notices. Their third album Endless Rooms, released in 2022, came out of a genuinely unusual situation: the band wrote it during COVID quarantine, unable to physically get together and rehearse. Tom Russo noted the isolation pushed the songs toward more logical structures rather than the freewheeling rearrangements they'd normally do in a room together. The record still landed well with critics, continuing a streak that also includes Sideways to New Italy, which made end of year lists at Rough Trade and Double J among others.
