Few electronic acts have managed to sound this simultaneously warm and glacial. Röyksopp, the Norwegian duo of Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland from Tromsø, built their reputation on their 2001 debut Melody A.M., a record that went platinum in Norway and sold over a million copies worldwide. The music video for "Remind Me" won the MTV Europe Music Award for best video, and "Eple" even snuck its way into the startup sequence of Mac OS X Panther. They were once approached to score The Matrix Reloaded and turned it down, which tells you something about where they were sitting at that point. Over the years Röyksopp has pulled in collaborators like Robyn, Karin Dreijer of The Knife, and Susanne Sundfør, moving freely between ambient downtempo and punchy electropop without ever sounding lost. Their 2014 album The Inevitable End was announced as their last album, but in 2022 they returned with not one but three records under the Profound Mysteries title, proving that whatever rules they set for themselves are really more like suggestions.
