About
Also known as: Francella Ruby Turner, Ruby Turne
Ruby Turner pulled off something very few British artists have managed: hitting number one on the US R&B chart, which she did in February 1990 with "It's Gonna Be Alright". That achievement sits at the heart of a career stretching well over four decades, built on a distinctive soul and R&B sound that first caught fire with her debut album Women Hold Up Half the Sky in 1986. That record gave her the UK hit "I'd Rather Go Blind", peaking at number 24, and established her as a serious force. Beyond her own recordings, Turner has been a go to session vocalist for a remarkable range of artists, from Mick Jagger and Bryan Ferry to UB40 and Steve Winwood. She has also written songs covered by Lulu, Yazz and Maxi Priest, and has performed at landmark events including the Diamond Jubilee Concert outside Buckingham Palace. A regular on Jools Holland's Annual Hootenanny since 2007, she was awarded an MBE in 2016 for services to music.
