Ryan Leslie operates in a space where producing for others and recording for himself overlap in ways that keep things interesting. He wrote and produced Cassie Ventura's 2006 debut single "Me & U", which hit number three on the Billboard Hot 100, and handled the entire album himself. That kind of full control over a project became a signature move. He also placed songs with Beyoncé, Kanye West, Britney Spears, Usher and a string of others, building serious production credits before most people knew his name as a recording artist. His own debut, the self titled Ryan Leslie from 2009, had a smooth contemporary R&B feel and was backed by singles including "Diamond Girl" and "Addiction". His follow up Transition earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album, and he kept moving independently from there, releasing Les Is More in 2012 without label support. Outside the studio, he founded SuperPhone in 2015, a direct text marketing platform, showing that his entrepreneurial instincts run just as deep as his musical ones.
