Few bands have made quiet sound so compelling. Sade, the London group built around vocalist Sade Adu alongside bassist Paul Denman, multi instrumentalist Stuart Matthewman and keyboardist Andrew Hale, carved out a singular space where soul, smooth jazz and sophisti pop meet, and stayed there across four decades. Their 1984 debut Diamond Life sold over four million copies worldwide and won the Brit Award for Best British Album, while the follow up Promise hit number one on both sides of the Atlantic and brought home their first Grammy. They kept that momentum going through Love Deluxe and Stronger Than Pride, and even after long gaps between records the audience never drifted far. Lovers Rock picked up the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album, and Soldier of Love in 2010 became their first number one debut in the US. By 2014 they had shifted 75 million records worldwide, a staggering figure for a group that never chased trends.
