Salt N Pepa were the first female rap act to go both gold and platinum, thanks to their 1986 debut Hot, Cool & Vicious. The trio of Salt, Pepa and DJ Spinderella started out in a Queens Sears lunchroom and a music school class project, and ended up selling more than 15 million records worldwide. "Push It" began life as a B side, then a remix turned it into their breakout hit. They kept the hits coming. Blacks' Magic gave them "Let's Talk About Sex", and 1993's Very Necessary moved over 5 million copies in the US, with "Shoop" and "Whatta Man" (alongside En Vogue) leading the way. In 1995 they won a Grammy for "None of Your Business", and a Lifetime Achievement Grammy followed in 2021. They went into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2025, and "The First Ladies of Rap" is a title they've more than earned.
