Salvatore Adamo writes his own songs, sings in eight languages, and by the mid 1960s was outselling every musician on the planet except The Beatles. Born in Sicily and raised in Belgium from age three, he recorded more than 80 million copies worldwide, making him the best selling Belgian artist of all time. His romantic French ballads, especially "Tombe la neige", "Inch'Allah" and "Petit bonheur", spread far beyond Europe, reaching Latin America, the Middle East and Japan, where the Japanese adaptation of "Tombe la neige" became the most popular Christmas song in the country, covered by over 500 artists. After a quieter spell in the 1980s when his style fell out of fashion, Adamo came roaring back in the 1990s, starting with a full season at the Casino de Paris. He has kept releasing and touring ever since, collaborating with Belgian singer Arno on the 2003 album Zanzibar and, in 2023, putting out In French Please!, a set of French adaptations of hits by Elton John, Pearl Jam and 10cc. His cultural reach has been recognised with the French Légion d'honneur, the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun and a Belgian knighthood.
