About
Also known as: Sandra Ann Lauer, Sandra Cretu, Sandra Lauer
Sandra outsold Madonna in several countries during her peak years, which tells you everything about how big she was in Europe during the 1980s and early 1990s. Born in Saarbrücken, Germany, she first made her name as the lead singer of disco trio Arabesque before going solo with the help of producer and eventual husband Michael Cretu. That partnership delivered a run of synth pop and euro disco hits that dominated the continent: "(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena" topped charts in 21 countries, and singles like "Secret Land", "Everlasting Love" and "Hiroshima" kept her a fixture across Europe. Her albums Into a Secret Land and Close to Seven are considered career highlights. She also lent her voice to Enigma, the project that scored top 10 hits in North America and the UK. With over 33 million records sold, she holds the title of most successful German female vocalist.
